How do you see nutrition?

Nutrition has always been a big part of my life, from learning how it can be used for those around me living with chronic illness, to adapting my cooking to cater to those with severe allergies, to simply ensuring I eat in a way that keeps me as healthy as possible.

For me it's always been a question of common sense, and even when I was young I didn't see the point of following fad diets, or even diets at all. It had to be about eating clean simple foods, as fresh and as close to nature as possible.

When I started working with my personal trainer, the keto diet came up in conversation as a way to burn fat faster, however, I always felt it wasn't for me. But keto seems to be everywhere.

Yesterday I watched a show on it. I was intrigued at the effect they were claiming it could have on autism. And having personally worked with people with dementia, I started wandering if it could be any good for them too.

But then it hit me.

I remembered years ago watching a program on the raw vegan diet and how it could "cure" diabetes and other chronic illnesses. My partner at the time had been living with chronic illness for several years with no respite, so we decided to try it for two months. Besides losing a lot of weight, nothing changed.

The problem wasn't we were doing anything wrong, it was we were already eating right. Every week, I would cross Paris and buy at least 20 kilos of fresh vegetables from local markets or farms and cook everything from scratch.

If you watch these shows you will notice they always select people living on an unhealthy, fast food heavy diet. So I ask, is it really the keto diet or the raw food diet or any other diet with a healthy name that is bringing people back to health?

I've worked with prediabetic people and through sensible eating alone, they came back into the normal range.

Is it the diet itself or is it simply returning to the roots of sensible eating, cutting out the junk and nourishing our bodies with simple nutritious food as close to nature as possible?

What's your take on this?
